Hackaday Prize Entry: A Manual, CNC Pick And Place Machine

Everyone who wants a 3D printer probably already has one, and even laser cutters and CNC machines are making their way into garages and basements ’round the world. Pick and place machines are the next great frontier of personal manufacturing, and even though that’s a long way off, [Tegwyn]’s project for this year’s Hackaday Prize is bringing us that much closer to popping down 0201 LEDs reliably. This project is a manual pick and place machine — otherwise known as ‘tweezers’. It’s a bit more complicated than that, because the entire idea behind [Tegwyn]’s build is to decouple a human’s fine motor skills from the ability to place components on a board. To do that, this project is using an off-the-shelf, blue light special CNC machine. There’s not much to it, just a bit of aluminum extrusion and some threaded rods. However, with the addition of a vacuum pump, a hollow needle, and a few manual controls to move the axes around, the operator has very fine control over where a resistor, cap, or LED goes. There are a few neat additions to the, ‘put a vacuum pump on a CNC machine’ idea. This is a 4 axis machine, giving the user the ability to rotate the part around a pad. There’s also a...

“You must be hungry. Come, eat!” said the chirpy voice from the kitchen.  This was our host, who, hearing that funding did not permit a hotel stay in Mumbai for our team of six actors, miraculously managed to accommodate all of us in her single bedroom Dadar flat. After making a lunch fit for the gods, she rolled out endless puris for tea. Then she followed us to the theatre, not a crease in her Puneri saree, not a  grey hair out of place, not a breath out of sync. You see, she was also introducing our English play to a seasoned Maharashtrian audience of natak buffs. This was Shanta Gokhale — theatre historian, critic, playwright, culture columnist — respected for her scholarship, acumen and writerly integrity. This frail, soft-spoken, unassuming woman can be pungent and outspoken,  and yet beloved for her warmth, wit and sense of humour.   Shanta is a rare intellectual who can analyse and dissect a work of art with clinical precision, even as she responds to it with empathy and love. She never allows prejudice to cloud her resolute feminism. And though we talked mostly about books and plays, I  did get a few glimpses into her personal life. I felt that those uncommon life expe...

Modular Drying Hopper Is Expandable And Convertible to a Crystallizer : Plastics Technology

Unlike typical welded construction, bolt-on sections provide flexibility and easier transport and installation. Wittmann Battenfeld’s new, large drying hoppers are built from bolted-together modules and are convertible to crystallizers using modular agitator assemblies. With the help of an outside partner, Wittmann Battenfeld can also design and build mezzanines. PET processors and recyclers, as well as molders of large parts from materials that may attract moisture, have a number of new and highly cost-effective options:  These novel capabilities are afforded by a new development from Wittmann Battenfeld, Inc., Torrington, Conn. The company is just now introducing a totally modular drying hopper/crystallizer that was conceived, designed, and built entirely by the U.S. operation of the Austrian Wittmann Group. This development was revealed exclusively to Plastics Technology at Wittmann’s October Open House and Innovations Workshop in Torrington. According to Michael Stark, divisional manager for material handling and auxiliaries, this development reflects the company’s desire to push more strongly into blow molding and extrusion. Nicholas Paradiso, engineering manager fo...

Red Magic 3S review: The fastest phone I’ve used, marred by big display issues [Update]

nubia left a great impression on me when it first released the Red Magic 3 with a cooling fan, and I was happy to find out that it lived up to my expectations in my review. Now, the company has come out with a successor, the Red Magic 3S, with some improvements to the Red Magic 3. The chipset and storage have been upgraded, so the phone should be even faster. Initially, I received the Cyber Shade model to review, but due to an unfortunate accident, I ended up having to get a replacement, and it was the Mecha Silver model. This model has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, just like the unit I reviewed for the Red Magic 3. Of course, like I said, that storage is now UFS 3.0 instead of 2.1, so it’s still an improvement. Design-wise, the Red Magic 3S is just about identical to the Red Magic 3. The phone is the exact same shape and size, something I’m not too happy with. It constantly feels like it might tip over in my hand, and it’s even prone to sliding out of my pocket. The biggest change in terms of design is really in the color schemes, with Mecha Silver replacing the red variant of the 8GB/128GB model, and Cyber Shade replacing the camo look for the 12GB/256GB model. I’m...

Australia unveils ‘label directory’ to protect wine brands

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> The directory, to be established by industry body Wine Australia, will help Australian wine brands to protect their intellectual property rights against those who wish to misuse them for their own gain. Called the Wine Australia Amendment (Label Directory) Bill 2019, the legislation grants permission for the creation of a “public-facing online database” of all Australian wine export labels. Commenting on the bill, minister for agriculture, senator Bridget McKenzie, said: “Industry asked our government for help in preventing the export of copycat labelled wines through the establishment of a label directory – we have listened and this legislation is an important step in delivering on that request. “Once implemented, all Australian wine exporters will be required to submit images of their labels before export, these images will be uploaded into the searchable directory.” McKenzie added that the move will bring “greater transparency” to exported wine labels and help to prevent “copycat export wines”. This in turn will help to “build c...

With Finisar’s recent announcement that its QSFP28 SWDM4 transceivers have reached the production stage, the building

With Finisar’s recent announcement that its QSFP28 SWDM4 transceivers have reached the production stage, the building blocks are in place to enable OM5 fiber to see application in 100-Gbps data center networks as well as the 40-Gbps applications for which the necessary transceivers are already available. However, as OM5 roll outs at this lower speed have proven less than brisk so far, one could be forgiven for wondering if the fiber will be any more popular at the higher data rate. The fact that optical cable vendors vary in their enthusiasm for the technology probably doesn’t help its popularity. Investment agreement helps Sudbury drone company access new markets

What started out as “a couple snowflakes” recently turned into an avalanche for a Sudbury-based drone company, which recently struck a deal that will assist its global expansion. Unmanned Aerial Services Inc. (UAS), an inspection service provider for indoor industrial confined spaces and underground mine locations, signed an investment agreement with Japan’s Terra Drone Corp. that gave Terra Drone a “significant stake” in the company, according to Matt McKinnon, CEO of UAS.  As part of the agreement, Terra Drone, a world leader in industrial drone solutions, will form a new subsidiary in Sudbury called Terra Drone Mining.  Their goal is to provide unmanned mapping and inspection services to underground mines around the world.  The new investment will give UAS the ability to penetrate other markets around the world, expanding beyond North America to areas like South/Central America, South Africa, Central Asia, Russia, and Australia.  UAS recently opened an office in Val D’Or, Que. and plans to open its next office in Montana in January 2020. In the future, the company is also aiming to set up shop in Johannesburg, South Africa and Santiago, Chile. The company current...

The new 3T Strada has blown me away. It’s a truly stunning bike with breathtaking speed,

The new 3T Strada has blown me away. It’s a truly stunning bike with breathtaking speed, impressive smoothness and fine handling balance. If this is the future, as some people have speculated, I’m sold. Take my money 3T. As for the issues about clearance and gearing – the two key talking points since the bike launched – well, they simply fade away once you ride the bike. I was left with the overwhelming impression that this is one of the most exciting road bikes available right now. The Strada certainly won’t be for everyone. And that’s fine, there are plenty of fantastic performance road bikes currently available if the 1×11 gearing, disc brakes and tight clearances frighten you. You are spoilt for choice in the high-end race bike market at the moment with some very fast and capable bikes to choose from. If a 1x setup really isn’t for you, 3T has recently announced the Strada Due that takes a double chainset. None are as radical as the new 3T, though. What the Strada does with its unique design is offer another choice. It achieves the same aim – of being stupendously fast – but takes a different path to get there. Let’s take a c...

HP Spectre x360 13 2019 Laptop Review: Outstanding Battery Life

The HP Spectre x360 13 has a much longer battery life than rivals and delivers great port selection, but its webcam needs an upgrade. With its chamfered edges, slim design and professional styling, the latest edition of the HP Spectre x360 ($1,099.99 to start, $1,299.99 as tested) is a top contender for those seeking an attractive, lightweight 2-in-1 laptop. The late 2019 refresh of the 13-inch model adds options for Intel’s 10th Generation Ice Lake CPUs and considerate details like a dedicated mute mic button.  But with rivals able to offer slightly better productivity performance and sharper webcams, shoppers have many options. The Spectre x360 aces the good looks category. Our review unit was silver, and to get it in nightfall black or poseidon blue sadly costs an extra $10 or $20, respectively. But the All CNC-machining aluminum finish and reflective touches in the HP logo and two diamond-cut hinges means you’re not settling in the looks department if you opt for the base color.  The Spectre’s signature chamfered edges are here too, with two angles on both the lid and deck by the display. The left one features the power button, and the other one has a Thunderbolt. Those ang...
