Shot Callers: Elisa Padilla on Miami Marlins’ New Marketing Strategy

Part of the Miami Marlins’ rebrand has been adjusting their approach to community relations. Meet the woman spearheading that effort. When a sports team undergoes a major overhaul, building a strong marketing presence becomes a high priority. In the Miami Marlins’ case, much of this relies on Elisa Padilla, senior vice president of marketing and community relations. Padilla, who also spearheaded another major brand shift when the Nets moved from New Jersey to Brooklyn, sat down with Adam White to discuss the Marlins’ renewed presence in the community and renewed dedication to building relationships with fans. Padilla: “When I came in, the logo, color palette, jerseys, everything was already designed. My job when I came in was to think through how we were going to launch the brand. One of the things that’s really important to us is that we infuse the fabric of this brand into the community. We put together a comprehensive 360 marketing campaign because the day that we launched this new brand, our goal was to be where people live, work and play.” Padilla: “I think that when you look at Miami and you look at the diversity and the richness that’s here and when you look at our new l...

The Ordinary License Plate’s Days May Be Numbered

The mundane vehicle license plate, along with the windshield wiper a virtually unchanged vestige from the dawn of the automobile, is in the midst of a 21st-century makeover. Several companies are applying digital technology to what has long been just a slab of metal, in hopes of making it cheaper to update your vehicle’s registration — and turning it into a portal to the connected world. Such changes benefit the vehicle owner as well as state motor vehicle regulators, according to Reviver Auto, a company in Foster City, Calif., that has developed technology to swap old-fashioned stamped plates for digital screens. “This is not about a license plate,” Reviver’s chief executive, Neville Boston, said. “It’s about connection. With a digital plate, you can be all connected in just one place.” Reviver Auto’s RPlate can be validated via cellular signal when registration fees are paid, saving a state the cost of postage and materials for paper renewals. The screen can display anything, making it easy to switch designs if an owner wants to buy a vanity plate. Amber Alerts can be flashed on the plate; if the vehicle is stolen, the plate can be changed to display that fact. When the vehicl...

All the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Easter Eggs and Comic References Search Close Search Close

Avengers: Endgame is a Russian nesting doll of Easter eggs. The grand conclusion to the first epic saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a towering monument to the franchise’s own history, as the heroes who survived the events of Infinity War literally have to revisit the series’s past in order to save the day. With so many winks and references, it can be a little tricky to spot all the Easter eggs, or tell which references are concealed little callbacks to the comics and which are just elemental aspects of the film’s core plot. An Easter egg isn’t really an Easter egg unless it’s hidden, after all. So, here are all of the comic book references, Marvel callbacks, and Easter eggs (plus a few pop culture nods we couldn’t resist) that you might have missed amid all of the spectacle of Endgame. While not necessarily an Easter egg, the general premise of Avengers: Endgame should be hugely familiar to any comic book reader. As with Infinity War before it, Endgame is loosely based on the 1991 comic series Infinity Gauntlet, which saw Thanos collect the Infinity Stones (Infinity Gems in the comics) and destroy half of all life, with the Avengers fighting to stop him, and then undo th...

The 2019 Wharton Startup Challenge: Finding a Way to Cool India More Efficiently

As climate change heats up the planet, more people will rely on air conditioners to cool down. But billions of air conditioners blasting at once can threaten the electrical infrastructure, especially in developing countries. With a tropical climate and more than 1.3 billion inhabitants, India alone is expected to become the world’s top user of electricity for cooling. Inspired by frequent trips to India, one Penn student and his colleagues have found a solution: a patent-pending air conditioner that combines two different cooling technologies to work up to 20 times more efficiently than conventional models. Aerate is the business venture of Wharton business and Penn engineering undergrads Ashwin Kishen, Connor Sendel, Yann Pfitzer, Jake Fine, Sam Weintraub and Spencer Collins. Aerate is also the Perlman Grand Prize winner of the 2019 Wharton Startup Challenge. The students received $30,000 for the grand prize and $15,000 in legal, accounting and strategy services to help bring their idea to the marketplace. Aerate was one of eight finalists chosen from a pool of nearly 30 semifinalists to pitch their idea in front of a live audience and a panel of expert judges. In addition to t...
